AT E-Survey: If Norman Maclean were to cast his eyes on a boat launch on the Bighorn… or the Madison… or the Upper Colorado… or any other of our famous western fisheries, on a given Saturday morning in the prime of summer, I imagine he would think:

• How wonderful it is that fly fishing, immortalized in his novella "A River Runs Through It", still captivates the interests of so many.
• That we’ve commercialized the sport to the point of being an absolute circus.
• That his brother, Paul, could cast better than anyone, in any of those boats.
• “What are those strike indicator things?”
• “I wonder if anyone has any extra bunyon bugs…”
• Probably all the above.
