Legislation was recently introduced in the House that would protect 234,328 acres in the Boundary Waters watershed from development of a sulfide-ore copper mine in its headwaters. If passed, H.R. 5598, the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act, would be the first step toward permanent withdrawal of mineral rights from the area.
“AFFTA and the fly fishing industry stand wholeheartedly for the protection of our public lands and waters,” Said Ben Bulis, AFFTA President. “The Boundary Waters are the epitome of pristine habitat for fishing and hunting. Abundant and awe-inspiring, the area is one of the last truly wild public places we can enjoy that is unspoiled by development. We thank House leadership for their bipartisan support of protecting this amazing resource and ask for a full approval of the bill.”
