Fly Fishing Shop & Outfitter in the Catskills Mountains FOR SALE

0

Since 1979 the Beaverkill Angler fly shop has sold hard and soft goods as well as offering an outfitting service in a world renowned fishery. This turn key operation has one of the best physical locations in town. You would achieve immediate cash flow (seasonally adjusted) and the building/store infrastructure is in excellent condition. It has a stable cash flow that has endured bad weather and the recent pandemic. Based on industry standards we estimate the business is conservatively in the top 20% nationally. We won the Orvis Dealer of the Year award in 2017.

It could be sold to an owner operator or as an investment. A new owner will have the flexibility of running an 8 or 12 month business cycle. Seasonally, the focus should be on maximizing in-store sales and seeking growth as an outfitter. The off season could be spent traveling. A 12 month operation should engage the all growth opportunities outlined below.

The shop represents the following major brands: Orvis, Simms, Patagonia, Winston, Ross, Sage, Fishpond, Redington, Rio, Scientific Angler, Cortland, Wulff Fly Lines, Umpqua, Whiting, Wapsi and Hareline. We offer guided fishing for customers on a walk wade basis as well as float trips. We also started expanding fee based instruction last season.

The store’s location is a stones throw from the Beaverkill and Willowemoc Rivers. Within 30 minutes of the East Branch, West Branch and Main stem of the Delaware. The Esopus, Neversink, and Schoharie Rivers are in striking distance.

The western Catskills has seen significant growth over the last 15 years and recently has benefited from an inflow of new homeowners and business. Our customer bases is diverse drawing from the New York metro region (Tri-state 20+ million people), the Philadelphia metro region, western New York State, nationally, and even internationally (proximity to NYC). We are primarily a seasonal regional destination fishery with people visiting us for the day, weekend or longer. The second home community has also been a growing market. Roscoe has see historic commercial property sales, new ownership of existing companies, and new storefront businesses. The region is also the last reasonably priced destination near New York City.

We feel we should address COVID. 2020 was a difficult start being in the regional epicenter of the initial outbreak during the busiest part of our season. We saw an initial decline in business due to the state lock downs; however, when things started to open up we rebounded. We managed a respectable season due to an increase in online sales, aggressive inventory management, and controlling costs. Three areas the pandemic positively impacted the business are regional economic expansion, rapid growth in guided fishing, and new people entering the sport.

Please initiate contact via email only (please do not call the shop), after which we can have an introductory meeting or phone conversation. If you are interested you will need to sign a non-disclosure agreement (we will provide the document) and verify your financial ability to purchase the business (and building if interested). We will not entertain fishing expeditions, no pun intended. Subsequently we can have additional conversations and/or meeting as you like to analyzed our financial information as well as to seek any guidance about the business, region, and industry. The inventory is not included in the asking price. We would value it at cost at closing and our inventory is very current. Please understand that we are interested in selling the business but only to the right person(s) in time.
