Have you been “greenwashed?”

The fashion industry is under increasing scrutiny for its impact on the planet, and rightfully so. One major way fast fashion is failing us is through greenwashing.

If you aren’t already familiar, “greenwashing” is a deceptive practice of making eco-friendly claims that either aren’t true or haven’t been backed by substantiated evidence.

Examples of this include:

Labeling garments as “recycled” without evidence of true sustainability

Promoting reduced packaging sizes, while still using materials that cannot be recycled

Not accounting for reliance on fossil fuels to transport goods and materials across the globe

But there are actions fashion companies can do to make a positive impact — using raw materials closer to home or investing in sustainable alternatives are just two of them. Yet most seem to be more concerned with increasing profits than how their actions affect the environment.
