Jess McGlothlin Joins AFFTA as Communications Director
The American Fly Fishing Trade Association has hired Jess McGlothlin to be its new communications director. McGlothlin is originally from Montana, most recently worked at Orvis in Vermont, and will be relocating to Bozeman in early October. She is a talented writer, photographer and angler, and we at Angling Trade are looking forward to working with her.
“McGlothlin is no stranger to the fly fishing industry, her dedication and passion for the fly fishing industry is evident in her work ”, said AFFTA President Ben Bulis. Her most recent role was as outdoor copywriter at Orvis, a position that evolved to include a host of special projects and photography assignments, including photo shoots in Belize, Montana, New York, and Alaska. She has a strong history as a freelance writer and photographer—in 2009 she founded her company, Jess McGlothlin Media and has since traveled from far northern Russia to remote South Pacific atolls for various commercial and editorial assignments. She will continue to grow her freelance business while working with AFFTA. A background including specialty fly shop, outdoor retail, lodge staff management, media development, staff newspaper positions, and conservation marketing ensures McGlothlin will be able to interface with the demands of the role. She’s been a passionate angler since flinging random things off the family drift boat as a toddler, and always eagerly explores new fishing opportunities.
“I’m thrilled to be joining AFFTA at this exciting time,” McGlothlin said. “Our industry is undergoing significant change, and there is an opportunity for the fly-fishing community as a whole to emerge stronger and more intelligent than ever.”
Ben Furimsky Now CEO at the Fly Fishing Show
Congratulations to our friend and colleague Ben Furimsky, who has officially been appointed president and CEO of The Fly Fishing Show, which produces the world’s largest consumer fly-fishing events. The Fly Fishing Show started in 1992 and Ben became involved in 1993. He has worked for the show as a speaker, fly tier, exhibitor, and staff member on site. Ben took over the role as co-director in 2009, working alongside his father, Chuck. Over the past six years, Ben has expanded his job duties with the show. He will now continue working full time overseeing the day-to-day operations. Chuck will continue his role as director and his wife, Janet, will continue managing ticket sales. Both will be available at all show locations. According to Chuck Furimsky, “Ben has been taking over the more challenging and time consuming jobs involved with the show, so completing his transition to President should be smooth and efficient. I’ll be looking forward to more fishing time.”
“I’ve been working with most of our exhibitors for quite a long time, so many will not even notice a transition. We are like a big extended family. My wife, Brooke, and I are very excited about the future of the Fly Fishing Show. I look forward to continued growth and moving our show ahead as a leader in the industry. We are already selling out our 2016 shows at a record pace which is a great indicator for our industry of the year to come,” says Ben Furimsky
