Assistant Product Developer – Full Time
Umpqua Feather Merchants is seeking an Assistant Product Developer. We are looking for someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about fly-fishing products, and in particular, fishing flies. This is a rare opportunity to join the most historic fishing fly manufacturer in the world and work closely with the best fly tyers anywhere. The job requires excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and works closely with and reports to the Director of Product. Together, we will continue to take the most innovative patterns, put them into production and make them available to the world.
DUTIES
Assist with new product development:
- Assist with royalty fly submission process (logging submissions and communicating results)
- Submit new products for system setup (raw and finished)
- Collaborate with new and existing royalty tiers to develop new flies to exacting specifications
- Create and maintain physical and electronic specifications
- Send specifications and samples to factories and coordinate counter-samples for approval
- Tie some sales/photo samples
Maintain required quality levels for all products:
- Perform quality inspection upon receipt of product
- Resolve quality issues by working with royalty fly tyers, raw materials, factory communications & travel
- Work with raw materials to assure highest quality and availability of appropriate materials (substitutes, etc.,)
Travel:
- Maintain current travel documents
- Passport and any necessary Visas for Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Laos
- Attend trade, consumer and tyer shows when necessary
SKILLS
- Working knowledge of Microsoft office (word, excel & outlook)
- Broad and strong fly-tying skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Desire to continually improve systems and processes
- Ability and willingness to learn about company products, programs, and mission
- Team oriented yet able to work autonomously
- Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism from peers
