From Airflo:
Airflo, one of the world’s premier fly line manufacturers, announced today its Zero Waste BoxTm used fly line and spools recycling program has gone live and is now active at participating fly shops around the United States. The program which was first announced at the 2023 Fly Fishing Shows is a one-of-a-kind recycling program where anglers can easily recycle old fly lines and other used fly line plastics at their local, participating fly shops – helping keep plastic waste out of landfills and out of the natural environment.
President of Airflo and its parent company Mayfly Group Jeff Wagner said, “We know that plastics, especially single-use and limited-life plastics are an issue. We also know that these make the best materials for many fishing applications. Where this is true, circularity through recycling is the best way to keep these plastics out of the environment and landfills.” Additionally, Wagner added “We strongly encourage upcycling and reusing fly lines in many ways including creating custom heads. At some point ALL fly lines will go beyond their usable life and the best place for these plastics at this point is recycling.”
Ty Cyphers, Director of Marketing for Airflo and Mayfly Group, said “It’s exciting to see this program go live right as the fishing season is kicking off. For participating fly shops, it provides a responsible method for recycling of used fly lines and plastic spools as they help customers purchase new products. For consumers, it is also encouraging to know your old fly line isn’t going straight to the dump. The plastics you used can go on to have a second life when recycled properly through an Airflo Zero Waste Box.”
The success of the program depends on fly shops participating in collecting materials through the Airflo Zero Waste Boxes and customers knowing they have an option to recycle their used fly lines and spools. For this reason, Airflo has made dealer and consumer participation easy.
All dealers regardless of dealer affiliation are encouraged to participate by signing up through Airflo’s website or emailing [email protected]. Current Abel/Airflo/Ross dealers are eligible to participate at no cost while other dealers are encouraged to still participate by becoming an approved Abel/Airflo/Ross dealer or paying a minimal fee covering the costs of the program.
