SOMERSET, NJ – The International Fly Fishing Film Festival will join The Fly Fishing Show at five show sites in 2012, jointly announced Chris Bird of the Film Festival and Ben Furimsky, representing The Fly Fishing Show.
Film Festival screenings will be held immediately following the conclusion of the Fly Fishing Show, about 6:30 p.m. depending on the venue. There will be separate admission charged for the films, but will be discounted for those attending the Fly Fishing Show, said Furimsky. Complete information will be posted on www.flyfishingshow.com.
Fly Fishing Show locations which will host International Fly Fishing Film Festival showings include Denver, Jan. 6; Marlborough, Mass., Jan. 20; Somerset, NJ, Jan. 27; Lancaster, Penn., Feb. 18; and Pasadena, Calif. March 3.
According to Film Festival producers, “The International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4) consists of 16 short and feature length films produced by professional and amateur filmmakers from all corners of the globe, showcasing the passion, lifestyle and culture of fly fishing. From steelhead in Northern BC to chasing multiple species in Costa Rica, the variety of films will pique the interest of all anglers. IF4 contains exclusive content not available in any other fly fishing film event.”

I just finished reading the 2011 Special Report on Fishing and Boating put out by the OIA (Outdoor Industry Association). The report says that the Pacific region (Washington, Oregon, Cali) is in the #1 slot at 16.5% when it comes to individual participation in the sport of Fly Fishing. Now granted I am sure there is a healthy contingent of folks (mostly N of the Bay) that angle in Cali. But there is also “we” who live in the great states of Oregon and Washington.
Yet, for the last few years, the Fly Fishing Show folks continue to blow us off, citing the “low attendance/vendor participation” excuse. I shared a booth at the last show in Portland, and went to a number of Seattle events. I think at least part of the reason behind the lackluster Portland show was poor marketing of an expensive venue. There are (believe it or not) other more intimate venues here. Most like myself shy away from the “Sportspersons Gala Extravganza” type of scene. To many lights, little or no worthwhile beverages/food, and of course, that 2 for the price of 1 “Golfperson blah blah” right next door… wrong setting.
We don’t do cookie cutter very well I guess, due to our uniqueness. But I bet a different approach would yield a different (better perhaps?) result.
